Green Mayoral Platform

In February, 2010, New Orleans held city-wide elections which were widely recognized as pivotal for the future growth, integrity, and ongoing recovery of the City. Leading up to this election the Green Collaborative drafted an eight-point plan for the greening of New Orleans, and presented this plan to all candidates running for Mayor and City Council.

The eight points addressed in the plan were:

  • Green Local Government
  • Green Buildings Citywide
  • Implement Best Practices for Energy Efficiency, Alternative Fuels, and Renewable Energy
  • Create a Green Economy with New Industries, Jobs, and Education
  • Find Better Uses for our Waste
  • Create Attractive, Healthy, Walkable Neighborhoods
  • Manage Water Resources to Protect Against Flooding and Restore Coastal Wetlands
  • Reduce Risk from Environmental Toxins

This Green Platform was well-received and widely distributed, and served to bring discussions of environmental sustainability and justice into the local political dialogue.

The Green Collaborative believes that the City of New Orleans is ideally situated to become a regional hub of green industry and commerce, and looks with optimism for the new Mayor and City Council to advocate and lead accordingly. View the full report here.
